BMKG Issues Alert for Four-Metre Waves in Javan, Balinese, and West Nusa Tenggara Waters
Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG) has urged operators of logistics vessels and fishermen to be vigilant about the potential for high sea waves of up to four metres in the waters around Java, Bali, and West Nusa Tenggara from 25 to 28 February 2026. The Director of Maritime Meteorology at BMKG, Eko Prasetyo, said in a statement in Jakarta on Wednesday that the early warning was issued as a mitigation measure to minimise the risk of maritime accidents due to increased wave height. According to him, waves of 2.50-4.0 metres are likely to occur in the waters of the Indian Ocean south of West Java, Central Java, the Special Region of Yogyakarta, East Java, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, and East Nusa Tenggara. This condition is considered to pose a high risk to the safety of fishing boats, barges, and ferries, especially if not accompanied by preparedness of safety equipment and regular weather monitoring. Eko appealed to shipping operators to pay close attention to the latest maritime weather information and postpone sailing activities if the wave height is deemed dangerous.
