BMKG: Heed potential high waves in North Sumatran waters
Medan – Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has reminded the public and other stakeholders to be alert to the potential occurrence of high waves in several waters off North Sumatra that could disrupt shipping.
“High waves have the potential to occur from 2 to 5 March 2026. Sea waves can reach 1.25 to 2.5 metres,” said Dasmian Sulviani, forecaster at BMKG’s Belawan Maritime Meteorological Station in Medan on Monday.
He noted that wind patterns in the North Sumatra region move from a west-northwest direction with speeds of 4-25 knots.
The high waves are likely to occur in the waters east of the Nias Islands, Batu Islands waters, the western Indian Ocean west of the Nias Islands, the western waters of the Nias Islands, the western waters of the Batu Islands, and the western waters of North Sumatra.
These conditions pose risks to maritime safety and fishing vessels when wind speeds reach 15 knots and wave heights reach 1.25 metres.
