BMKG Hang Nadim Class I Meteorological Station in Batam has warned the public to be vigilant for the potential of sudden rainfall that may occur in Batam today. The humid and warm atmospheric conditions are still considered to support the formation of local rain clouds, particularly from midday to afternoon.

Forecast data indicate that daytime air temperatures in Batam are expected to range from 24 to 31°C, with humidity levels quite high at 70 to 98 percent. This indicates that the atmosphere is extremely humid, thus facilitating the growth of convective clouds that could produce rain in a short period.

The forecaster at Hang Nadim explained that in the morning until late morning, weather conditions are generally forecast to be relatively stable with mostly partly cloudy to cloudy skies. However, as surface warming increases in the afternoon, the likelihood of rain cloud formation rises significantly.

“Overall, morning to early afternoon weather will remain cloudy to partly cloudy. However, from midday to afternoon there is potential for rain cloud growth that can cause local showers of light to moderate intensity,” the Hang Nadim BMKG forecaster said on Tuesday (19 May).

BMKG explained that sudden rainfall phenomena are common in archipelagic regions such as Batam, especially during transitional seasons or when atmospheric conditions are sufficiently unstable. Strong daytime heating can drive moist air upwards into the upper atmosphere, forming Cumulonimbus clouds that can produce rain with short duration but varying intensity.

In addition to rain, wind conditions in Batam are expected to be relatively light to moderate. However, in some cases of convective rain-cloud growth, brief gusts may occur around the rain area.

BMKG also reminded that although today’s weather is not classified as extreme, the public should remain vigilant to rapid and non-uniform weather changes across regions. Rain can occur at one location but not in neighbouring areas within a relatively short distance.

Therefore, BMKG urges the public, especially road users, fishermen, and outdoor workers, to monitor weather conditions before carrying out activities. Drivers are advised to beware of slippery roads and reduced visibility when rain falls suddenly.

At night, the weather is forecast to stabilise again with mainly cloudy to overcast skies, and the likelihood of rain diminishing.

BMKG emphasised that Batam’s weather today is dynamic, so the public is advised to continuously follow the latest weather information from official channels to anticipate rapid changes in atmospheric conditions.
