BMKG Hang Nadim Warn of Thunderstorm and Sudden Weather Changes in Batam
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Hang Nadim Class I Meteorological Station has urged residents of Batam and the Riau Islands to remain vigilant for potential thunderstorms forecasted throughout Sunday (24 May). Today’s weather is expected to fluctuate, starting with partly cloudy skies in the morning, then light to moderate rain in the afternoon, evening, and night due to high humidity and warm surface temperatures fostering convective cloud formation.
BMKG forecaster Suratman stated the current atmospheric conditions remain active, conducive to localized showers accompanied by brief lightning and strong gusts. “Light to moderate rain with possible thunderstorms is still likely in Batam and surrounding areas, particularly from midday to afternoon. We advise the public to stay alert for sudden weather changes,” he said on Sunday (24 May).
Coastal areas like Batam experience rapid weather shifts, especially when rain clouds develop due to morning surface heating. Current temperatures range from 26 to 32 degrees Celsius with high humidity, while wind speeds are between 3 to 8 knots with variable directions.
The weather conditions also affect air and sea transport, critical for Batam’s mobility. At Hang Nadim International Airport, conditions remain safe until morning with horizontal visibility above 10 kilometres under partly cloudy skies. However, BMKG is closely monitoring developing rain clouds that could cause flight delays or landing issues. “Flight operations are generally safe, but afternoon rain poses a risk to take-offs and landings, especially if cumulonimbus clouds form near flight paths,” he added.
For maritime activities, BMKG highlighted busy international and domestic routes such as Batam–Singapore and Batam–Malaysia. Wave heights are forecasted at 0.2 to 0.6 metres, considered safe for ferry and passenger operations. Nevertheless, users are urged to exercise caution due to sudden localised rain, strong winds, and lightning at sea. “Sea conditions are generally safe, but captains and ferry operators should monitor updated weather reports before sailing,” he said.
Port operations at Batam Centre, Harbour Bay, Sekupang, and Nongsapura remain normal this morning, with no major disruptions to ferry schedules to Singapore. Residents have reported unpredictable weather recently, with hot, clear mornings turning to sudden rain in the afternoon or evening. BMKG advises the public to monitor official forecasts, avoid sheltering under large trees during thunderstorms, and stay cautious near coastal and open sea areas. Localised rain is expected to persist in the coming days, especially during afternoon and evening hours.
