BMKG Confirms Extreme Weather Across Several Regions Unrelated to Lunar Eclipse
Extreme weather has affected several regions across Indonesia in recent days. BMKG said the phenomenon is not related to the occurrence of the total lunar eclipse. “The lunar eclipse has no influence on weather conditions, particularly in Indonesia,” said Ida Pramuwardani, Director of Public Meteorology, at a virtual press conference on Wednesday, 4 March 2026. Ida explained that the extreme weather in parts of Indonesia in the last few days occurred due to a number of factors. First, the emergence of tropical cyclone seeds 90S and 93S off the southern coast of Java and in the vicinity of the Indian Ocean. “The impact of these cyclone seeds is an increase in rainfall, including higher rainfall in areas such as the western part of West Java, eastern Java, central Java, Bali, and as far as Nusa Tenggara,” Ida said. In addition to the cyclone seeds, the extreme weather in Indonesia is also driven by the persisting Asian monsoon. The monsoon, according to Ida, contributes to the ascent of air masses in southern Indonesia, leading to heavy rainfall. Head of BMKG Teuku Faisal Fathani added that BMKG has prepared steps to address the extreme weather. From today, BMKG, in collaboration with BNPB, will undertake weather-modification operations in several parts of Indonesia. “BMKG has already coordinated with BNPB and also the provincial governments that starting today, in anticipation of the extreme weather, BMKG and BNPB will begin weather-modification operations in West Java, Central Java and Bali from today,” he said. Teuku also said that the weather conditions in Jakarta are being monitored by BMKG. Weather-modification operations will also be carried out if deemed necessary. “For DKI Jakarta, conditions will continue to be monitored; if required, the Jakarta BPBD will fund the execution of weather-modification operations,” he concluded.
