Palembang (ANTARA) — The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) at Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin (SMB) II Palembang, South Sumatra, has indicated there is potential for heavy-intensity rainfall across the province through the end of February 2026.

“Based on current atmospheric dynamics, the weather in South Sumatra is forecast to bring light to moderate rainfall over the next three days. After that, there will be an increase in intensity to moderate to heavy rainfall through the end of February,” said Sinta Andayani, Head of the Data and Information Team at BMKG SMB II Palembang, when contacted in Palembang on Monday.

Rainfall is forecast across nearly all of South Sumatra, she said, though greater vigilance is needed regarding the potential for moderate to heavy rainfall in the eastern parts of the province, such as Banyuasin Regency, Ogan Komering Ilir (OKI) Regency, Ogan Ilir (OI) Regency and the city of Palembang.

BMKG also warned of potential hydrometeorological impacts, including waterlogging, localised flooding, fallen trees and disruption to road and river transport.

Sinta added that weather conditions would continue to be updated by BMKG daily in order to provide the latest information to the public. Residents were urged to monitor weather forecast developments through official BMKG channels and to follow guidance from local government authorities and relevant agencies.

In addition, the public was reminded to ensure drainage channels in residential areas are clean and unblocked to minimise the risk of waterlogging during heavy rainfall.

BMKG stressed that early vigilance and public preparedness are key to reducing the risk of hydrometeorological disaster impacts during the period of increased rainfall through the end of February 2026.
