The potential increase in rainfall intensity must be anticipated as it could trigger secondary hydrometeorological impacts, such as flooding, flash floods, landslides, fallen trees, reduced visibility, and strong winds.

Ternate (ANTARA) - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) at the Class I Sultan Babullah Meteorological Station in Ternate has urged vigilance over the potential for extreme weather in the form of moderate to heavy weekly rainfall in North Maluku for the period of 16–22 February 2026.

Weather Forecaster at the Class I Sultan Babullah Meteorological Station in Ternate, Muhammad Dzkrie, said on Monday that based on analysis of current atmospheric dynamics, wind deflection has been observed causing air mass accumulation around the North Maluku region. This condition has the potential to increase rain cloud formation in several areas.

In general, he said, weather conditions in North Maluku during this period are forecast to be cloudy with light rain. However, the public should be alert to increases in rainfall of moderate intensity that may occur intermittently during the morning, afternoon, evening, night and early hours.

“The potential increase in rainfall intensity must be anticipated as it could trigger secondary hydrometeorological impacts, such as flooding, flash floods, landslides, fallen trees, reduced visibility, and strong winds,” said Sakimin.

The weather forecast for 16–17 February 2026 indicates potential light to moderate rainfall across most areas of Morotai Island Regency, North Halmahera Regency, West Halmahera Regency, Ternate City, Tidore Islands City, Central Halmahera Regency, East Halmahera Regency, South Halmahera Regency, Sula Islands Regency, and Taliabu Island Regency.

Subsequently, on 18–19 February 2026, there is potential for moderate to heavy rainfall that may be accompanied by lightning and strong winds, forecast across most areas of Morotai Island Regency, North Halmahera Regency, West Halmahera Regency, Ternate City, Tidore Islands City, Central Halmahera Regency, East Halmahera Regency, South Halmahera Regency, Sula Islands Regency, and Taliabu Island Regency.

Likewise, from 20–22 February 2026, moderate to heavy rainfall is still likely across most areas of Morotai Island Regency, North Halmahera Regency, West Halmahera Regency, Ternate City, Tidore Islands City, Central Halmahera Regency, East Halmahera Regency, South Halmahera Regency, Sula Islands Regency, and Taliabu Island Regency.

BMKG has urged regional governments and the public to ensure infrastructure capacity and water resource management systems are in a state of readiness to anticipate increased rainfall. Furthermore, coordination, synergy and communication between relevant agencies need to be intensified as a preparedness measure against potential hydrometeorological disasters.

The public has also been asked to recognise disaster potential in their respective environments and take simple mitigation steps such as not littering, maintaining environmental cleanliness, and working together to maintain drainage and water channels.

BMKG reminded all stakeholders and the public to continue monitoring official information issued by the Class I Sultan Babullah Meteorological Station in Ternate through available official communication channels.
