Indonesia’s Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) recorded at least 20 earthquakes ranging in magnitude from 2.1 to 4.1 shaking various regions of Indonesia in the early hours of Tuesday (10 March), with no reports of damage or casualties so far.

BMKG data monitored by ANTARA from Bogor shows the earthquakes occurred between 00:44:43 and 05:15:14 Western Indonesian Time (WIB), spread across several waters and land areas of Indonesia.

Regions registering seismic activity included the waters around Sumbawa, the Banda Sea, Flores, Halmahera, South Sumatra, south of Java Island, and West Papua.

One of the largest earthquakes during this period had a magnitude of 4.1, occurring in the Banda Sea at 01:13:28 WIB.

Another significant earthquake was recorded south of Java Island at 05:15:14 WIB, with a magnitude of 2.9 and located approximately 19 kilometres deep. The earthquake’s epicentre was located at coordinates 9.67 degrees south latitude and 113.02 degrees east longitude in waters south of Java.

In addition to these two earthquakes, BMKG recorded numerous smaller earthquakes with magnitudes ranging between 2.2 and 3.1 across various Indonesian regions.

This zone forms part of an area stretching from East Asia to America, characterised by intense tectonic activity. The convergence of the Eurasian, Indo-Australian, and Pacific tectonic plates causes the Indonesian region to frequently experience earthquakes. Most of the earthquakes occurring in this zone stem from subduction zone activity or movements along active fault lines.
