Blueray Boss John Field Faces 3-Year Prison Sentence in Customs Bribery Case
Blueray Cargo Group chief John Field has been sentenced to three years in prison and a fine of Rp300 million, with a subsidiary of 100 days’ imprisonment, over alleged bribery of several officials at the Directorate General of Customs and Excise. Based on legal facts revealed during the trial, the Public Prosecutor from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) believes John Field has been proven to have committed the criminal act as charged. “Sentencing Defendant I John Field to imprisonment for three years and a criminal fine of Rp300,000,000, with a subsidiary prison sentence of 100 days,” the prosecutor stated while reading the criminal sentencing demand at the Corruption Court at the Central Jakarta District Court on Monday (22/6). In addition to John Field, the prosecutor demanded the panel of judges at the Central Jakarta Corruption Court deliver a guilty verdict against two other defendants: Dedy Kurniawan Sukolo, Operational Manager of Port Customs Clearance at Blueray Cargo Group, and Andri, Head of the Import Documentation Team at Blueray Cargo Group. The prosecutor demanded both be sentenced to two years and six months in prison and a criminal fine of Rp200,000,000 each, with a subsidiary prison sentence of 80 days. John Field and his associates were deemed by the prosecutor to have been proven to violate Article 605 Paragraph (1) letter a of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code, in conjunction with Article VII Number 48 Article 605 letter a of Law Number 1 of 2026 concerning Criminal Adjustments, in conjunction with Article 20 letter c in conjunction with Article 126 Paragraph (1) of the Criminal Code, and other laws and regulations related to this case. “Ordering that the period of detention of the Defendants be fully deducted from the prison sentence imposed. Ordering the Defendants to remain in custody,” the prosecutor said. In handing down the criminal sentence demand, the prosecutor revealed a number of aggravating and mitigating circumstances. The aggravating factor was that the Defendants did not support the government’s programme to realise a government free from Corruption, Collusion, and Nepotism. The Defendants’ actions were said to damage the image of the Directorate General of Customs and Excise of the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia. Meanwhile, the mitigating factor was that the Defendants were polite during the trial and had never been convicted. In the indictment, the prosecutor stated that John Field and his two subordinates bribed several officials at the Directorate General of Customs and Excise with money totalling Rp61 billion and the provision of entertainment facilities and luxury goods worth Rp1.8 billion. The bribe recipients consisted of the Director of Enforcement and Investigation, Rizal; the Head of the Intelligence Sub-Directorate of the Directorate of Enforcement and Investigation, Sisprian Subiaksono; and the Head of Customs Intelligence Section I of the Directorate of Enforcement and Investigation, Orlando Hamonangan. The cluster of Customs and Excise officials will be prosecuted in a separate case file. Of that amount, Rizal received at least Rp14,000,000,000, Sisprian Rp7,000,000,000, and Orlando around Rp4,050,000,000. The remainder was enjoyed by other parties who have not yet been legally processed. One of them is Enov Puji Wijanarko, Head of Import Enforcement Section I of the Directorate of Enforcement and Investigation. Meanwhile, the details of the facilities provided to the Customs and Excise officials included entertainment facilities worth Rp1,450,000,000, a Tag Heuer watch worth Rp65,000,000 to Orlando, and a Mazda CX-5 car worth Rp330,000,000 to Enov Puji Wijanarko. According to the prosecutor, the bribe was given so that officials at the Directorate General of Customs and Excise would expedite the release of imported goods belonging to Blueray Cargo Group from the customs supervision process.
