Jakarta (ANTARA) - The House of Representatives Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP) DPR RI expressed its stance on Israel’s actions in the Middle East at the international parliamentary forum, the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), held in Istanbul, Turkey.

BKSAP DPR RI Chairman Syahrul Aidi Maazat, as per a statement received in Jakarta on Sunday, said one of Israel’s actions highlighted was the attack on UN peacekeeping forces in Lebanon that killed three Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) personnel.

“In front of representatives from 150 countries earlier, we from BKSAP DPR expressed our stance on Israel’s actions in the Middle East. One of the most highlighted issues is Israel’s act of shooting dead three TNI personnel as members of UNIFIL,” said Syahrul.

According to him, Israel’s action was “beyond the limits” because it attacked peacekeeping forces.

In addition, BKSAP also strongly condemned Israel’s military actions in Palestine that continue to bomb Gaza. Most recently, the Israeli Government has approved a law regarding the death penalty for Palestinian citizens.

“Israel has become a parasite for us all. It disrupts the geopolitical order, the economy, and destroys world peace. We request that all countries unite in pressuring Israel so as not to open the door to a third world war,” stated Syahrul.

Meanwhile, BKSAP DPR RI Deputy Chairman Muhammad Husein Fadlulloh, in a session discussing the role of parliaments towards the UN, said parliamentary involvement is an important factor for programmes to run more effectively.

“The Indonesian delegation believes that the presence of the UN at the government level alone will not achieve its maximum potential without active parliamentary involvement, as an institution holding a direct mandate from the people,” he said.

He also emphasised the need for transformation in the UN’s coordination patterns, not only focusing on relations with the executive government, but also opening wider dialogue spaces with legislative institutions.

“The presence of the UN must be supportive, not dictatorial. Every programme in the field must align with our national priorities, including President Prabowo Subianto’s vision of achieving energy independence and strengthening human resources through the national nutrition programme,” he said.

According to him, such synergy can accelerate the preparation of emergency regulations while increasing the effectiveness of aid mobilisation.

In that context, BKSAP DPR RI encouraged the UN to be more active in facilitating parliamentary involvement in strengthening disaster resilience in each country.

In addition, he affirmed that collaboration between the UN and parliaments must also cover humanitarian issues, including Gaza. “Indonesia will not stop urging the UN to support a permanent and full ceasefire resolution in Gaza,” he added.

Husein further emphasised Indonesia’s commitment to continue playing an active role in pushing for UN reform to make it a more inclusive and democratic institution.

“Indonesia is committed to continuing as an active partner in reforming the UN to become a more inclusive, democratic institution that respects the central role of national parliaments in maintaining world peace and prosperity,” he said.
