Badung (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Population and Family Planning (Kemendukbangga)/BKKBN has asked Bali Governor Wayan Koster to consider regional balance before promoting the Four-Child Family Planning (KB) Programme.

“Last night, the Governor said in Bali, what if a family has four children, is that wrong? We said it’s not wrong but not quite appropriate, because it’s fine to have four or five children, please do, but certainly considering balance,” said Secretary of Kemendukbangga/BKKBN Budi Setiyono in Badung on Thursday.

Budi, at the National Population Symposium Year 2026 in Badung Regency on Thursday, suggested that the Bali Provincial Government ensure the regional fiscal conditions and then consider the subsequent risks if there is an excess or shortage of population in an area.

The Bali Governor has made the Four-Child KB Programme one of the priorities to maintain the growth of native Balinese population, especially as names like Nyoman and Ketut (third and fourth children) are becoming rarer.

Meanwhile, these native residents are the key figures who have long upheld traditions and culture as the root of Bali’s tourism.

Not only from the aspect of health services for the community, Kemendukbangga/BKKBN also asked the Bali Provincial Government to ensure education services and employment potential.

“Including whether our living environment can still accommodate if our population grows high, can we still preserve our forests, so we are at a crossroads, the scenario can fail if we do not act wisely,” he said.

Kemendukbangga/BKKBN acknowledges that they no longer set KB as the definition of Family Planning with a certain number of children, but rather as planned community.

And vice versa, to avoid a region having a shortage of population leading to a slowing economy.

“Our task in connecting what was conveyed by the Bali Governor is to achieve or realise demographic balance, that our population in essence should not be too many, but also not too few,” said Budi Setiyono.

“So what is actually needed in the industrial world, yes, the availability of services, availability of jobs and so on, then the supply in that aspect must also be adjusted,” he added.
