Bird's Eye Chilli Becomes Highest Inflation Contributor in Bali in February 2026
Bird’s eye chilli became the largest contributor to inflation in Bali Province in February 2026. The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Bali Province recorded monthly inflation in February 2026 at 0.70 per cent, with the primary inflationary pressure originating from the food, beverages, and tobacco category.
By commodity, bird’s eye chilli was the highest contributor, with inflation reaching 66.12 per cent and contributing 0.27 per cent to overall inflation. BPS attributed the rise in bird’s eye chilli prices to weather factors.
“The main commodities from the food, beverages, and tobacco group causing inflation include bird’s eye chilli. The rainy season has been disrupting production,” said Agus Gede Hendrayana Hermawan, Head of BPS for Bali Province, on Monday (2 March 2026).
Beyond weather factors, Hermawan explained that demand dynamics also influenced price movements. He noted that significant religious observances such as Lunar New Year and Ramadan drove increased demand for foodstuffs.
“When supply drops whilst demand remains high, prices will rise,” he explained.
Other commodities contributing to inflation in Bali included poultry at 3.86 per cent with a 0.11 per cent contribution, jewellery gold at 10.00 per cent with a 0.05 per cent contribution, and red chilli at 32.08 per cent with a 0.05 per cent contribution.
Conversely, several commodities experienced deflation, including petrol at 1.40 per cent deflation with a 0.07 per cent contribution, carrots at 15.91 per cent deflation with a 0.02 per cent contribution, pork at 0.91 per cent deflation with a 0.01 per cent contribution, and garlic at 1.55 per cent deflation with a 0.01 per cent contribution.
