JAKARTA (JP): The Bekasi regency has set the end of June as the deadline for the replacement of billboards using foreign languages with new ones using proper bahasa Indonesia, an official said yesterday.
Memet Rochmat, head of Bekasi's Revenue Office, said that there is no reason for advertisers not to use bahasa as the government has launched an aggressive campaign on its proper use.
"We have issued a circular, distributed to billboard owners in Bekasi, for them to change their language," he said.
The replacement of billboards using a foreign language to bahasa is free of charge, except if their owners change the size and the shape of the billboards, he said.
Rochmat said that the replacement order not only applied to certain billboards but to all kinds of advertisements. "This is intended to help achieve the government's plan to popularize the use of bahasa," he said. (12/hhr)
