JAKARTA: The House of Representatives (DPR) has arranged the deliberation of its initiative bills on the establishment of five regencies.

The five regencies to be established under the new bills are Samosir, Batubara and Humbung Hasu Dutan in North Sumatra, and East Luwu and North Mamuju in South Sulawesi.

Legislators are expected on Friday to deliberate initiative bills on the formation of new regencies in Tojo Una-una, South Oku, North Oku, East Oku, North Minahasa, Bombana, West Sumbawa, Central Sumbawa, North Kolaka, Wakatobi, Dhamas Raya, Dobo and Ogan Ilir.

Demands for the creation of regencies have been on the rise since the fall of the authoritarian New Order regime in 1998. There are over 400 regencies and mayoralties registered with the Ministry of Home Affairs. -- JP
