Bill on new regencies in the pipeline

JAKARTA: The House of Representatives (DPR) has arranged the
deliberation of its initiative bills on the establishment of five
regencies.

The five regencies to be established under the new bills are
Samosir, Batubara and Humbung Hasu Dutan in North Sumatra, and
East Luwu and North Mamuju in South Sulawesi.

Legislators are expected on Friday to deliberate initiative
bills on the formation of new regencies in Tojo Una-una, South
Oku, North Oku, East Oku, North Minahasa, Bombana, West Sumbawa,
Central Sumbawa, North Kolaka, Wakatobi, Dhamas Raya, Dobo and
Ogan Ilir.

Demands for the creation of regencies have been on the rise
since the fall of the authoritarian New Order regime in 1998.
There are over 400 regencies and mayoralties registered with the
Ministry of Home Affairs. -- JP
