JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com — Bank Indonesia (BI) says the rupiah’s weakness up to trading today, Wednesday, 4 March 2026, remains in line with the trend of Asian currencies weakening against the US dollar. Senior Deputy Governor Destry Damayanti said the rupiah has declined month-to-date (MTD) by 0.51 per cent. She noted that this depreciation is still better compared to regional currencies.

‘The rupiah’s depreciation remains aligned with the region, relatively better than the regional (currencies),’ she said in a written statement on Wednesday.

One of the measures being taken involves market interventions such as Non-Deliverable Forward (NDF) in offshore markets, spot trading and Domestic Non-Deliverable Forward (DNDF) in domestic markets.

These market intervention steps were accompanied by purchases of government securities (SBN) in the secondary market.

‘BI will continue to be present in the market to maintain exchange rate stability to prevent the impact of the widening Middle East conflict,’ she said.

In addition, BI notes that its foreign exchange reserves, which remained at 154.6 billion US dollars at the end of January 2026, are still strong enough to support BI’s intervention steps in the market.

The continued foreign capital inflows into the domestic financial markets in 2026 amounting to Rp 25.7 trillion also indicate confidence in Indonesian financial assets remains intact.

Citing Bloomberg data at 09:40 WIB, the rupiah exchange rate at the opening of today’s trade was approaching the Rp 17,000 per US dollar level. The rupiah weakened 0.25 per cent or 43 points from the close on Tuesday (3 March 2026) to Rp 16,915 per US dollar. The morning depreciation was deeper than Tuesday’s session, when the rupiah closed down 4 points (0.02 per cent) at Rp 16,872 per US dollar.

Meanwhile, other regional currencies also weakened, with the Thai baht down 0.40 per cent or 0.13 per dollar to 31.72 baht per dollar, and the Indian rupee down 0.55 per cent or 0.50 points to 91.47 rupees per dollar.

Similarly, the Philippine peso weakened 0.31 per cent or 0.18 points against the US dollar, and the Taiwan dollar weakened 0.42 per cent or 0.13 points.
