Beware of War! Trump Opens Option to Send Troops to Assault This Communist Country
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - US President Donald Trump is reportedly beginning to consider the option of using military force or “kinetic power” to overthrow the communist regime in Cuba. This move comes amid massive pressure from the Cuban-American community in Florida, which is demanding total regime change in the island nation.
A source familiar with the Trump administration’s thinking revealed that the military option is being considered, although the current primary focus remains on diplomatic channels. The US government continues to try to persuade the Cuban regime to make various changes, particularly in the economy, which is currently in dire straits.
“The Cuban exile community, which is my community, states that there will be no real economic change until you have real political change,” emphasised Orlando Gutiérrez-Boronat, General Secretary of the Cuban Resistance Assembly, stressing that this sentiment has spread among Cuban-American businesspeople in the United States.
Republican state senator Ileana Garcia even issued a stark warning to Trump about the political consequences if no firm action is taken. She stated that if the US does not take military action or intervention to overthrow the regime, Trump’s image among Florida voters will be ruined.
“Inaction in Cuba will certainly affect how people in South Florida vote. This is crucial given that the Cuban-American community is a loyal support base for Trump that is highly influential in elections,” Garcia warned.
Currently, the Trump administration has implemented an energy blockade and expanded sanctions against Cuba through the latest executive order. However, the White House and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are said to be sending mixed signals about whether they will demand total regime change or merely economic reforms.
The latest poll from the Miami Herald shows that 78% of Cuban exiles will not be satisfied if only economic reforms occur without political change. The majority of them even support military intervention, either to overthrow the government or for humanitarian missions.
On the other hand, Cuba is facing a severe crisis due to the halt in oil deliveries from Venezuela, triggered by US sanctions policy. The country is plagued by mass blackouts that are paralysing transportation, healthcare services, and the supply of water and food to residents.
“It feels like a valve that will explode sooner or later,” said a US official monitoring the situation on the ground.
Nevertheless, the risk of a massive migration crisis remains a primary consideration for Washington in deciding on a military strike. Moreover, to date, the Cuban opposition group in Miami continues to refine the “Freedom Agreement” as a roadmap towards democracy after the communist regime collapses.
“They hope this transition can be realised before the end of this year as pressure from the Trump administration increases,” stated a Politico report.
