Beware of Price Increases Ahead of Eid al-Fitr
The Regional Inflation Control Team of Yogyakarta Special Region (TPID DIY) has intensified monitoring of prices and food stocks through direct field inspections at Pasar Sleman Units 1 and 2 and Indogrosir on Jl. Magelang. The inspections have been conducted due to the likelihood of basic commodity prices rising ahead of Eid al-Fitr.
According to Eling Priswanto, Head of the Economics and Natural Resources Bureau of the Yogyakarta Provincial Government Secretariat, chicken prices have experienced the most significant increases at approximately Rp2,000 per kilogramme, with varying prices between Rp39,000 and Rp41,000 depending on the distributor. Packaged cooking oil prices have risen by approximately Rp1,000 per litre, whilst bulk cooking oil has remained stable at Rp21,000 per kilogramme. Sugar prices have remained stable at Rp17,000 per kilogramme.
Conversely, egg and raw chilli prices have declined. Egg prices currently stand at Rp29,000 per kilogramme, down from Rp31,000 per kilogramme previously, whilst raw chilli prices have fallen to Rp85,000 per kilogramme from the earlier level of Rp110,000 per kilogramme.
Officials expect further price increases as Eid al-Fitr approaches due to increased demand associated with the religious holiday. Price differences between traditional markets and modern retail outlets are considered normal, reflecting differences in packaging and presentation. Sleman Deputy Regent Danang Maharsa has indicated that should significant price increases occur, the local government has already implemented anticipatory measures, including organising subsidised food markets in various locations.
“Essential commodity stocks remain secure and available. There is no need for excessive purchasing—buy only what is needed. There is no cause for alarm,” Maharsa stated.
Central Java Provincial Government has intensified the Cheap Food Movement (GPM) and market operations. A total of 308 GPM initiatives are scheduled to be conducted across all districts and cities in Central Java. Rice stocks of up to 136,000 tonnes are being maintained to ensure price stability ahead of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr 2026, despite geopolitical tensions. Jakarta Provincial Government has projected increased demand for essential foods ahead of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr, particularly for chicken eggs, meat, shallots, and cooking oil.
