Beware of Measles, Jakarta Health Authority Urges People Not to Kiss Babies and Toddlers During Eid
The Jakarta Health Authority (Dinkes DKI) has stated that no measles cases have been detected among Jakarta residents to date. However, the authority is advising the public not to hold or kiss children, as they are a vulnerable group susceptible to measles.
“One of our key messages is to refrain from handling or kissing children, especially infants and toddlers, because their immune systems are still very vulnerable,” said Ani Ruspitawati, Head of the Jakarta Health Authority, at the Duren Sawit Regional Special Hospital in East Jakarta on Tuesday, 10 March 2026.
The Health Authority is calling on the public to remain vigilant ahead of the Eid holiday. So far, measles has not been detected in Jakarta.
“Measles has not been confirmed positive in Jakarta at this time. Therefore, we are conducting surveillance and monitoring,” she said.
Ruspitawati explained that monitoring is being carried out at several healthcare facilities designated as surveillance sites for diseases with influenza-like illness (ILI) symptoms as well as severe acute respiratory infections (SARI). Patients showing symptoms will be examined further in laboratories.
“There are several healthcare facilities serving as surveillance sites for ILI and SARI. Any patients we identify with symptoms will be tested in the laboratory,” she said.
Although no cases have been confirmed in Jakarta, Ruspitawati noted that several areas surrounding the capital have begun reporting measles cases. Therefore, the public is urged to remain vigilant, particularly as the Eid holiday approaches.
“So far, there have been no cases among those residing in Jakarta. However, areas around Jakarta have indeed started to report cases. This remains a matter for our collective vigilance, especially approaching the holiday period when there will be increased social interaction,” she explained.
