Jakarta’s Health Office (Dinkes) is heightening vigilance against the potential spread of measles across the capital. Although no confirmed cases have been detected in Jakarta to date, precautionary measures through strengthened surveillance systems at various healthcare facilities are being tightened.

Ani Ruspitawati, Head of Jakarta’s Health Office, emphasised that this intensive monitoring aims to detect early any potential emergence of cases within the community. This is crucial given reports of cases appearing in areas surrounding Jakarta.

“Measles has not been confirmed positive in Jakarta. We continue to monitor through surveillance,” Ani stated on Wednesday, 11 March.

In its implementation, Jakarta’s Health Office has designated several healthcare facilities as surveillance points. Monitoring efforts are directed at patients showing symptoms similar to influenza or Influenza Like Illness (ILI) as well as Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI).

Ani explained that if patients with clinical indicators suggesting measles symptoms are found, medical staff will immediately undertake further action. This involves comprehensive laboratory examination to ensure diagnostic accuracy.

“If we find symptomatic patients, we will have them tested in the laboratory. So far, within Jakarta residential areas there are none, but in areas around Jakarta cases have indeed started appearing,” she added.

Increasing population mobility and community interaction ahead of the Lebaran celebrations are receiving special attention from health authorities. High population mobility between regions potentially increases the risk of transmission of communicable diseases, including measles.

Ani reminded that infants and young children are the most vulnerable groups to exposure because their immune systems remain immature. She urged the public to be more cautious when interacting with young children to prevent unintended transmission.

“Babies and children must be properly protected. Do not casually hold or kiss infants and toddlers because their bodies’ resistance is still very vulnerable,” Ani emphasised.

This preventive measure is expected to contain the potential for disease outbreaks (KLB) in Jakarta. The public is also asked to remain calm yet vigilant, and to immediately seek medical examination at the nearest healthcare facility if experiencing high fever accompanied by red spots on the skin.
