Betawi Lebaran Strengthens Unity and Reinforces Jakarta's Identity
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo emphasised that the 2026 Betawi Lebaran celebration plays a strategic role in strengthening community unity while reinforcing Jakarta’s cultural identity as a global city deeply rooted in local traditions.
“Betawi Lebaran serves as a crucial moment to rediscover Jakarta’s true identity. Betawi culture is the primary identity that must continue to thrive and evolve amidst changing times,” Pramono stated during his speech at the 2026 Betawi Lebaran celebration in Lapangan Banteng, Central Jakarta, on Saturday.
In his address, Pramono began by expressing gratitude for the event, initiated by the Majelis Kaum Betawi in collaboration with Bamus Betawi and supported by various parties.
He viewed this collaboration as a tangible example of synergy between the community, customary leaders, and the government in preserving cultural heritage amid the rapid development of a metropolitan city.
According to him, Betawi Lebaran is more than just an annual agenda; it is a space for meaningful social and cultural togetherness.
This tradition, Pramono said, brings warmth, strengthens familial ties, and enhances a sense of brotherhood among Jakarta residents from diverse backgrounds.
Furthermore, he explained that the various unique traditions in Betawi Lebaran carry profound philosophical values. The tradition of seeking forgiveness from parents and elders reflects respect for family values.
There is also the nyorog tradition, or delivering food, which embodies the spirit of sharing and social care deeply ingrained in Betawi culture.
Pramono stressed that preserving Betawi culture cannot be limited to art performances or festivals alone.
More than that, sustained efforts are needed to safeguard cultural values, strengthen identity, and instil them in the younger generation as part of everyday life.
Moreover, he continued, as a special region, Jakarta has a long history inseparable from the role of the Betawi community. Therefore, knowing and preserving Betawi culture is a collective responsibility of all Jakarta residents.
On this occasion, Pramono also touched on the importance of honouring Betawi figures who have contributed to Jakarta’s development, one of whom is MH Thamrin.
He regards Thamrin as a representation of Betawi intellectuals who made significant contributions to development, culture, and Jakarta’s progress.
“We must continue to elevate the names and roles of Betawi figures as part of Jakarta’s identity. This is not just about history, but also inspiration for future generations,” Pramono said.
On the other hand, he revealed plans to transform Lapangan Banteng into a new icon for hosting various cultural activities in Jakarta.
He assessed that the location holds high historical value and has become a public space representing community togetherness.
“Lapangan Banteng is highly historical. Many important national events have taken place here. We want to make it a centre for cultural activities that represent the spirit of unity,” Pramono stated.
With the relevant regulations in place, the government bears greater responsibility to ensure the preservation and development of Betawi culture proceeds systematically and sustainably.
Pramono is optimistic that if all elements of society, especially Betawi leaders, can unite, Betawi culture will advance rapidly.
Not only in cultural aspects, but also in improving human resource quality, which is an important part of Jakarta’s future development.
“If the leaders unite, with the same spirit and aspirations, Betawi culture will progress further. The impact will also be felt in enhancing the quality of the community,” Pramono asserted.
The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government, he said, continues to promote various cross-cultural and interfaith activities as part of efforts to strengthen unity.
A series of cultural events in Jakarta will continue throughout the year, from religious celebrations such as Christmas, New Year, Chinese New Year, Nyepi, Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, to the upcoming 499th anniversary of Jakarta.
“We want to ensure that Jakarta becomes a city that is not only economically advanced but also strong in culture and society,” Pramono said.
At the end of his speech, he expressed appreciation to all parties who contributed to organising the 2026 Betawi Lebaran.
Pramono hopes that similar events can be held consistently as part of efforts to maintain diversity, strengthen togetherness, and preserve Betawi culture as Jakarta’s primary identity.
“Through Betawi Lebaran, we are not only celebrating traditions but also nurturing togetherness and strengthening unity. This is the strength of Jakarta as a diverse yet united city,” Pramono concluded.
The 2026 Betawi Lebaran took place from 10-12 April with the theme “Betawi Lebaran for Jakarta: Strengthening Unity in Nurturing Traditions Towards a Global Jakarta City”.
The event began with a thanksgiving night featuring recitations, maulid, tahlil, sermons, and joint prayers on Friday (10/4) from 18:30 to 21:30 WIB.
On Saturday, from 08:00 to 23:00 WIB, various cultural attractions were held, including ondel-ondel, tanjidor, silat, gambang kromong, as well as ceremonial activities, a grand silaturahmi, and public entertainment such as Betawi lenong and wayang performances.
On the final day, Sunday, 12 April, from 06:00 to 22:00 WIB, it featured relaxed and interactive activities, starting from group exercises, traditional Betawi games, folk storytelling, cultural carnivals, procession of offerings, Betawi culinary presentations, to music performances.
The public could enjoy a variety of Betawi cuisine and visit a bazaar of local products to encourage economic growth for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
