Betawi art finds the spotlight

JAKARTA (JP): A 10-day exhibition is promoting the culture of the Betawi, the indigenous residents of the city, in conjunction with the 472nd anniversary of the capital.

The event, opened on Tuesday evening at Kedai Bis Tingkat restaurant in the Sudirman Central Business District complex in South Jakarta, will feature Betawi traditional dances, music, plays and other art forms, such as Tanjidor, Ondel-ondel, Marawih, Lenong and Gambang Kromong.

They will be held nightly at the restaurant, which is built in the form of a double-decker.

Head of the organizers Anton Chekov said a number of children were included among the performers.

Also part of the celebration are 25 shops and vendors selling handicrafts at the location.

Next Tuesday visitors will be invited to participate in an open discussion with artists and several anthropologists about the status of the Betawi community and culture.

"With this event, hopefully the Betawi community can be part of Jakarta's future and won't be remembered only as the former owner of the city," Anton said.

It is jointly organized by the owner of Kedai Bis Tingkat and Betawi Community Foundation at a total cost of Rp 100 million (US$14,500) and following a three-month-long preparation.

Anton noted that the organizers experienced difficulties in finding performers.

In attendance at the opening ceremony were various officials, including staff of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, city administration and noted Muslim preacher Zaenuddin M.Z., who is also chairman of the Betawi Community Foundation. (04)
