Betawi art finds the spotlight<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A 10-day exhibition is promoting the culture of
\nthe Betawi, the indigenous residents of the city, in conjunction
\nwith the 472nd anniversary of the capital.<\/p>\n
The event, opened on Tuesday evening at Kedai Bis Tingkat
\nrestaurant in the Sudirman Central Business District complex in
\nSouth Jakarta, will feature Betawi traditional dances, music,
\nplays and other art forms, such as Tanjidor, Ondel-ondel,
\nMarawih, Lenong and Gambang Kromong.<\/p>\n
They will be held nightly at the restaurant, which is built in
\nthe form of a double-decker.<\/p>\n
Head of the organizers Anton Chekov said a number of children
\nwere included among the performers.<\/p>\n
Also part of the celebration are 25 shops and vendors selling
\nhandicrafts at the location.<\/p>\n
Next Tuesday visitors will be invited to participate in an
\nopen discussion with artists and several anthropologists about
\nthe status of the Betawi community and culture.<\/p>\n
"With this event, hopefully the Betawi community can be part
\nof Jakarta's future and won't be remembered only as the former
\nowner of the city," Anton said.<\/p>\n
It is jointly organized by the owner of Kedai Bis Tingkat and
\nBetawi Community Foundation at a total cost of Rp 100 million
\n(US$14,500) and following a three-month-long preparation.<\/p>\n
Anton noted that the organizers experienced difficulties in
\nfinding performers.<\/p>\n
In attendance at the opening ceremony were various officials,
\nincluding staff of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture,
\ncity administration and noted Muslim preacher Zaenuddin M.Z., who
\nis also chairman of the Betawi Community Foundation. (04)<\/p>",
