Bener Meriah Hopes to Build Bulog Warehouse for Disaster Mitigation
Bener Meriah (ANTARA) — Bener Meriah Regional Secretary Riswandika Putra has expressed hope that a Bulog warehouse will be constructed in the area to maintain rice stocks.
Riswandika said the Sumatra disaster had provided many lessons, particularly regarding blocked access routes and the difficulty of obtaining logistics supplies, especially rice. To mitigate future disasters, he said, a Bulog warehouse is needed to store rice stocks, as none currently exists in Bener Meriah.
"Our hope is to build a Bulog warehouse in Bener Meriah for rice stocks in case the region faces a disaster. As for other matters, road access for disaster mitigation and other preparations must be carried out swiftly," he said on Saturday (21/2).
Riswandika noted that Bener Meriah is classified as one of the regencies within a disaster-prone zone.
The district is home to the active Burni Telong volcano, which in recent months has seen its alert status raised from Level II (Watch) to Level III (Alert).
"Considering the mitigation prediction of a 100-year dormancy period for Burni Telong, this is also an important concern for us, the people of Bener Meriah," he said.
"Based on the existing disaster-prone area mapping, approximately 24 villages would be directly affected. And there are more than 28,000 residents whom we would be obliged to evacuate should an eruption of Burni Telong occur," he added.
According to data from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) on Saturday, Bener Meriah remains affected by the Sumatra floods, with a total of 4,025 people still displaced.
Records also show 1,648 public roads damaged, 649 bridges affected, and 59 educational facilities damaged. In terms of housing damage in Bener Meriah regency, a total of 1,411 homes were damaged, comprising 854 severely damaged, 186 moderately damaged, and 371 with minor damage.
