Benefits of Isotonic Drinks for Quick Rehydration
During exercise, the body loses not only fluids through sweat but also important electrolytes such as sodium and potassium, which help maintain the body’s fluid balance. Therefore isotonic drinks are often chosen to help hydrate the body faster than plain water, especially after moderate to high-intensity physical activity. Isotonic drinks, also known as sports drinks, contain electrolytes such as sodium, chloride, potassium, phosphate, calcium, and magnesium. Dietitian Dr. Diana Felicia Suganda explains that the human body consists of fluids. ‘Our bodies are 60-65 percent water; within these fluids there is water and electrolytes,’ Dr. Diana said at the Powerade launch event titled ‘Power Your Hydration’ at FX Sudirman, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday (19/05). Sodium and potassium are minerals that maintain fluid balance. The two constituents can be found in isotonic drinks. Consuming isotonic drinks can help replace fluids and minerals lost through sweating. ‘Rehydration using the right combination of electrolytes will greatly help the body maintain internal balance while optimising muscle and nerve function,’ Dr. Diana said. ‘Blood pressure can rise and fall. Sometimes it can drop, leading to hypotension or even hypertension,’ Dr. Diana added. The sodium and potassium content in isotonic drinks, she says, can help keep fluids balanced and thereby prevent hypertension. This is especially needed for people who often engage in activities late into the night and have difficulty sleeping. Muscle cramps are one of the signs of dehydration. Electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium play important roles in muscle contraction and relaxation. When electrolyte levels fall, muscles are more prone to cramping, weakness, and fatigue during physical activity.
