BEM SI Stages Demonstration at Monas Demanding Indonesia Leaves the Board of Peace (BoP)
The Alliance of Indonesian Student Executives (BEM SI) has urged the Indonesian government to withdraw from membership of the Board of Peace (BoP). The call was issued in a policy statement titled Ramadan Melawan: Dukung Perjuangan Revolusioner Rakyat Palestina dan Timur Tengah, released ahead of a student rally at Monas in Central Jakarta on Saturday, 7 March 2026.
In the statement, BEM SI argues that Indonesia’s membership of the Board of Peace conflicts with the principles of an independent foreign policy and could weaken Indonesia’s commitment to the Palestinian people’s struggle for independence.
“BEM Seluruh Indonesia stands with all elements without barriers, a manifestation of students’ disgust with symbolic diplomacy that has produced no tangible results for Palestinian independence,” wrote the Coordinators for Political Issues and Democracy and for Law, Human Rights, and Corruption of BEM SI.
The student alliance also criticises the government’s diplomacy as still symbolic and not yielding concrete steps to stop violence in the Middle East. They say the worsening humanitarian situation demands a tougher stance from the government.
BEM SI also strongly condemns the Zionist regime and urges the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the United Nations (UN) to act concretely with economic sanctions, diplomatic isolation, and effective humanitarian intervention to halt bloodshed. This is expected to restore the nation’s sovereignty.
Furthermore, BEM SI calls on the Indonesian government to use its position as President of the UN Human Rights Council to take firm action against any human rights violations carried out by Israel and the United States. “There must be no double standards, in defence of international law and absolute protection for civilians,” they wrote.
The students also remind that foreign policy should not overlook domestic issues. They urge the government to ensure energy supplies remain safe and the national economy stable so that the public does not bear the consequences of global geopolitical dynamics.
As a form of political pressure, BEM SI invites the public to join the demonstration to be held in the Monumen Nasional area, Central Jakarta, on Saturday, 7 March. Each participant is asked to arrive at Monas by 14:30. The action, they say, is part of the students’ effort to express solidarity with the Palestinian people’s struggle and to demand a tougher foreign policy stance from the Indonesian government.
