Bekasi Mayor Conducts Surprise Inspection, Uncovers Illegal Cable Digging and Unpermitted Buildings
Amid preparations for performing the Hajj pilgrimage in 1447 Hijriah, Bekasi Mayor Tri Adhianto carried out a surprise inspection (sidak) at several locations in Bekasi City. During the inspection, Tri discovered several issues disrupting residents’ comfort and safety on the roads. The sidak included activities involving the digging of optic cables suspected of lacking official permits, among others in Jalan Jatimakmur, Pondok Gede, and Jalan Wibawa Mukti, Jati Asih, on Sunday (3/5/2026). Tri stated that information about the illegal digging largely comes from public reports, with residents feeling disturbed. “The public is now more active in providing information. They say, ‘Sir, there is still digging here, it causes traffic jams, the road was just built and it’s being damaged again’,” he said. Nevertheless, he emphasised that the authority to take action remains with the government. According to Tri, digging activities conducted on holidays further exacerbate traffic conditions in Bekasi City, which already has high mobility, especially on weekends. He stressed that every digging project must have an official permit and consider road conditions. “This cannot be allowed to continue. We will take firm action to maintain public order and safety,” he asserted. In addition to addressing illegal digging, the Bekasi City Government is also carrying out road repairs and drainage system improvements, one of which is on Jalan Raya Pekayon, in front of the Grand Galaxy City area. “These repairs are a form of our commitment to respond quickly to residents’ complaints. Good roads free of flooding certainly provide comfort,” he said. He added that future development will not only focus on roads but also supporting systems like drainage to prevent flooding issues from recurring. During the sidak, Tri highlighted the presence of large embankments and boundary walls suspected of lacking permits and triggering public complaints.
