Traffic on Jalan Swatantra in South Bekasi is severely congested as a result of road improvement works. Observations on Friday 27 February 2026 showed vehicle queues stretching approximately 600 metres from Pekayon towards Jatiasih and vice versa. Authorities have implemented a lane closure system as half the road width is being concreted and fitted with drainage channels.

One resident, Suryadi (40), expressed that whilst the congestion is inconvenient, it is worthwhile if it results in better and safer road access. “The congestion is temporary, but afterwards the road will be much better. Previously, without this concrete work, many accidents occurred. Motorcycles fell over and vehicle axles broke from hitting potholes,” he explained.

Another resident, Suparman (51), viewed the current congestion as part of the necessary process, emphasising that rider safety is more important than temporary traffic disruption. “As residents here, we’re pleased the road is being improved. Congestion is a risk, but it’s part of the process. How can it improve without proper construction work? Better than having all these holes causing accidents,” he said.

The Bekasi City Government, through the Roads and Water Resources Department (DBMSDA), is ensuring the project is accelerated for rapid completion. For Jalan Swatantra specifically, the functional target has been set before the Eid holiday travel period.

“We are targeting completion of concrete pouring and drainage installation by 10 March, so that the road can be used comfortably by the public before the holiday exodus,” said Michael Arcos, Technical Implementation Officer for the Pekayon Raya-Pondok Gede Road Improvement Project, on Friday 27 February 2026.

The Swatantra Road project covers improvements to 310 metres of road. Arcos explained that the project employs fast-track concrete technology, which requires only 24 hours for initial curing. “Normally concrete takes two weeks before it can be used, but this fast-track version can be fully used after three days. We are also conducting concrete pouring each night to accelerate the concrete maturation process,” he explained.
