Before or After Iftar, When Is the Best Time to Exercise During Ramadan?
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Many people still want to stay fit during the fasting month of Ramadan by exercising. However, many are still unsure about the best time to train, whether before breaking the fast or after breaking the fast. Dr Ega Jaya, a Specialist in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, said that essentially there are no fixed rules for the timing of exercise during fasting. Physical activity can be performed either before or after breaking the fast, provided it is adjusted to one’s goals and body condition.
“Actually there is no precise time for exercise during the fasting month. It can be done at both times—before breaking the fast and after breaking the fast,” said Dr Ega at the launch of OMRON TENS in Central Jakarta, on Wednesday (4 March 2026). This is influenced by daily activity rhythms, energy levels, and the objectives of the training.
Some people choose to exercise towards the time of breaking the fast. This time is regarded as fairly ideal for those who merely want to maintain fitness without engaging in high-intensity training. “There are even some who prefer before breaking the fast so as not to feel sleepy. Some people feel that when exercising before breaking the fast while hungry, the sleepiness disappears and they feel more refreshed,” said Dr Ega.
Thus, energy recovery can occur more quickly. He added that physical activity at this time should not be too strenuous. If the goal of exercise is merely to keep the body in good shape, light to moderate intensity workouts are enough. “If it’s only to maintain fitness, then the exercise can be before breaking the fast. It’s important not to push the body to avoid injuries,” he said.
Types of exercise that can be chosen at this time include leisurely walking, stretching, yoga, or light cardio.
