Ahead of Eid al-Fitr 1447 H, prices of essential commodities in several traditional markets have crept upwards, including red chillies, eggs, rice, garlic, chicken, beef, and vegetables. This rise is due to increased purchasing power but constrained supply caused by weather factors.

Dinda (44), a resident of Kalektoran, Indihiang Subdistrict, Tasikmalaya City, West Java, stated that prices of various essentials in traditional markets are rising ahead of Eid, despite the local government’s recent cheap food movement (GPM) having no impact.

The increases in essentials have begun with red chillies, eggs, shallots, garlic, chicken, beef, and premium rice.

“The current essentials situation is widely complained about by buyers because of the significant rises, such as bird’s eye chillies at Rp95,000, local red chillies at Rp70,000, Japlak red chillies at Rp95,000, curly red chillies at Rp70,000, and lamb chillies at Rp110,000 per kg. However, vegetables like beans, carrots, cauliflower, water spinach, and tomatoes have risen by Rp1,500,” she said on Friday (20/3/2026).

According to her, the rises in essentials ahead of Eid among various traders include beef sold at Rp160,000 to Rp180,000 per kg, chicken at Rp48,000 per kg, medium rice at Rp13,500, premium rice at Rp14,000 to Rp16,000, eggs at Rp32,000, bulk cooking oil at Rp24,000 per kg, and packaged Minyakita at Rp20,000 per kg.

“Traders reason that the weather over the past few days has caused many fields to be buried in landslides and floods, and some are waiting for harvest time. However, demand is starting to rise for items like shallots at Rp45,000, garlic previously sold at Rp48,000, chicken at Rp48,000, and beef at Rp180,000 per kg,” she added.

Meanwhile, Solihin, 55, a beef seller at Cikurubuk Market, said that prices for slaughter cattle needs ahead of Eid 1447 H have crept up from previously Rp140,000 to Rp150,000, now reaching Rp180,000 per kg, and prices usually change after Eid. The beef price increase is because traders are selling their last stock and there are not many buyers.

“The beef price rises that occur in every region for traders have persisted. However, the beef price increase has long been happening, from previously Rp110,000 per kg to Rp125,000, and now Rp180,000; beef rises usually occur ahead of Idulfitri,” he explained. (AD)
