Be Aware of Recurring Coughs and Fevers in Children, as They Could Be Symptoms of Congenital Heart Disease
Parents are advised not to underestimate the condition of children who frequently experience recurring coughs and fevers within a year. Although it may seem like a common respiratory infection, this condition should be a cause for concern as one of the early indications of Congenital Heart Disease (CHD).
Cardiologist, Dr. Asmoko Resta Permana, Sp.JP(K) FIHA, explained that coughs in cases of CHD have a different mechanism than coughs caused by viruses or bacteria in general.
In children with CHD, there is often a leak in the blood vessels leading to the lungs.
“Yes, inflammatory coughs are caused by inflammation in the throat, viral or bacterial infections, but in congenital heart disease, there is a leak,” said Asmoko, quoted on Thursday (February 26).
This leakage causes the heart to pump blood with great force towards the lungs. As a result, fluid accumulates, or what is medically known as a condition of fluid buildup in the lungs. This fluid buildup then becomes an ideal place for bacteria to multiply.
“So, if our lungs are flooded, bacteria really like to multiply there. So, it also causes inflammatory coughs, recurring fever, which we call pneumonia,” explained the Pediatric Cardiology and Congenital Heart Disease Consultant.
Because the symptoms are very similar to the flu, colds, or even tuberculosis, many parents and healthcare professionals often misinterpret this condition. In fact, coughs in children with CHD tend to be persistent and occur repeatedly.
In addition to coughs and fevers, Asmoko explained several other clinical signs that should be observed, including:
Asmoko strongly emphasizes the importance of early detection. Ignoring these symptoms is very risky, as children can lose their lives before a diagnosis can be made. He urged parents to immediately have their children checked if they find an unusual cough pattern, shortness of breath during activity even for a short time, or a bluish discoloration on the face. Prompt treatment can prevent serious complications and provide better life opportunities for children with CHD. (Ant/Z-1)
Unlike ordinary fever, the condition of Kawasaki patients does not improve even after taking antibiotics.
Fever-reducing medication is only needed in certain conditions, especially if the child’s physical condition begins to be disturbed.
This condition is not actually a sign that the disease is attacking the muscles, but rather a natural response of your immune system.
West Sumatra recorded the highest number of fever cases among the three provinces affected by landslides and floods in Sumatra and Aceh. During the period of November 25-29, 2025, 376 cases of fever were recorded.
A thermometer needs to be sterilized to kill germs and bacteria if it is used on many people.
Children are the most vulnerable group when disasters occur. This is because they generally do not yet have the ability to express their emotions verbally.
Identifying trauma in children requires special sensitivity because they are not yet able to communicate their feelings verbally.
A strong body condition is essential so that children can cope with the various side effects of chemotherapy.
Inappropriate screen time is considered to have a significant impact on a child’s growth and development.
