Baznas delivers 400 iftar meal packages to South Jakarta scavengers
In a statement issued on Friday, Head of Baznas Distribution and Utilization Division Saidah Sakwan said the initiative was part of efforts to ease the burden of economically disadvantaged people during the fasting month.
“We channel the alms entrusted to Baznas into public welfare programs, including the provision of Ramadan meals for underprivileged residents such as those in Gasong Village, to ensure they can break their fast with proper food,” she said.
Sakwan noted that the Ramadan food program had become an annual agenda targeting communities struggling with poverty in various regions across the country.
She added that Baznas aims to reach both rural and urban populations facing high economic disparity, disaster risks, and poverty rates through the initiative.
“This program equally serves urban areas because we are aware that they are not spared from severe economic disparities. Gasong Village was chosen as a priority location due to its alarming social and economic conditions,” Sakwan elaborated.
The official further noted that villagers have long faced limited access to clean water, proper sanitation systems, and habitable housing. These conditions, she continued, highlight the urgency for additional interventions from relevant stakeholders.
Gasong residents welcomed the Ramadan program. A scavenger, Cipto, 76, expressed gratitude for the food, which he regarded as proof of the government’s care for the poor. He has lived in the village for more than 30 years with his wife and children.
“Praise be to God, the Baznas and donors care for us. We are deeply grateful for this program,” he said, voicing hope for continued assistance for villagers.
