Police say jealousy and personal conflict were central to the fatal stabbing in Batu Besar

A man in Batam has surrendered to police after allegedly killing a former same-sex partner in a boarding house in Nongsa, in a case investigators say was driven by jealousy and emotional conflict.

Suspect Surrenders to Police

Police in Nongsa have questioned M. Yusuf, the suspect in the killing of a man identified as AS in Batam. According to investigators, Yusuf turned himself in to Nongsa Police shortly after the incident on March 10, 2026.

Officers said his arrival at the station surprised police because there were visible bloodstains on his body. He was immediately taken into custody and remains under intensive questioning.

Relationship Had Reportedly Deteriorated

Investigators said Yusuf and the victim had been in a relationship for about a year. Their relationship reportedly became strained while Yusuf was working in Bali, forcing them into a long-distance arrangement for around seven months.

Police said the victim later asked to end the relationship, reportedly saying he wanted to return to a “normal life.” Yusuf then allegedly learned that AS had begun seeing another man, identified as AB, which investigators say triggered feelings of betrayal and anger.

Incident Unfolded in Family Dream Housing Area

According to police, Yusuf allegedly rented a house across from the victim’s residence on the morning of March 10 to monitor AS’s movements. He later followed the victim to a house in the Family Dream housing complex in Batu Besar, Nongsa.

Investigators said Yusuf entered the property and found AS with another man inside a room. A confrontation followed, and police allege the situation quickly turned violent.

Victim Died From Stab Wounds

Police said the victim suffered stab wounds and was taken to Bhayangkara Hospital, where he was later confirmed dead. Authorities identified injuries to the back and head area, but investigators are still documenting the full evidence and witness statements.

The second man present at the scene, identified as AB, was also reportedly assaulted but survived. Police have not yet released full details about his condition.

Police Continue Building the Case

Nongsa Police chief investigators said the motive appears to be jealousy and emotional hurt, but the case file is still being completed. Officers are gathering physical evidence and witness testimony to support the investigation.

The suspect has reportedly expressed regret, telling reporters he acted out of anger after feeling deceived. Police have not yet announced the final charges but said the murder investigation is ongoing.

The Nongsa killing has shocked residents in Batam and underscored how personal disputes can escalate into deadly violence. For Indonesians, the case is a reminder of the importance of early intervention in volatile domestic conflicts. For Singaporeans and others in the region, it also reflects the broader reality that urban safety challenges in nearby cities like Batam can stem as much from private emotional disputes as from organized crime.
