High-tech aquaculture modeling aims to position Kepri as export hub

Batam is strengthening its position in the global seafood market as the Batam Marine Aquaculture Center accelerates a high-tech lobster cultivation program targeting export-grade production.

One-Ton Harvest Target for 2026

The Batam Marine Aquaculture Center has set a target to harvest at least one ton of premium lobsters by the end of 2026. The program is part of an integrated cultivation modeling system designed to ensure long-term sustainability and export readiness.

BPBL Batam head Ipong Adi Guna confirmed on February 26, 2026, that the facility is currently in the grow-out phase. He emphasized that lobster farming requires precise timing and careful maintenance to meet international market standards.

High-Tech Integrated Cultivation Model

The center is applying a structured modeling system that focuses on sustainable production cycles and controlled growth management. This approach aims to create a replicable blueprint for Indonesia’s broader aquaculture industry.

Ipong noted that distribution is expected toward the end of 2026, depending on biological growth rates and size requirements. He stressed that the program is designed to be sustainable rather than a one-time production push.

Export Markets and Species Variety

BPBL currently cultivates three lobster species: sand lobster, pearl lobster, and bamboo lobster. Singapore remains the primary export destination due to its geographic proximity to Batam.

As of 2025, South Korea has also become an export destination through air freight routes. This expansion strengthens Batam’s strategic role in regional seafood trade networks.

Pricing and Market Value

Under Non-Tax State Revenue regulations, the base price is set at IDR 360,000 per kilogram, approximately SGD 28.80 per kilogram.

Market prices can rise to IDR 500,000 per kilogram, approximately SGD 40.00, depending on size and demand. A one-ton harvest could therefore generate between IDR 360 million and IDR 500 million, equivalent to approximately SGD 28,800 to SGD 40,000.

Building on Previous Milestones

The upcoming target follows a successful harvest in September 2025, which yielded about 1.7 tons of lobster. The event was attended by the Vice President and the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries.

By refining its integrated modeling system, BPBL Batam aims to solidify Kepri as a premier hub for export-quality lobster production. The initiative reflects Indonesia’s broader push to strengthen high-value marine exports and improve aquaculture standards nationwide.

Batam’s one-ton lobster target highlights Indonesia’s growing ambition in sustainable aquaculture. With Singapore and South Korea as key markets, the program not only boosts regional trade ties but also positions Riau Islands as a strategic player in premium seafood exports across Southeast Asia.
