Batam Ferry Ticket Scam: Three Arrested for Roro Ticket Broker Fraud
Police uncover ticket brokering scheme at Telaga Punggur ferry terminal targeting travellers
Batam police have arrested three suspects linked to a ferry ticket brokering scam at ASDP Telaga Punggur Port, after a passenger reported being deceived while attempting to purchase a Roro ferry ticket.
Police Reveal Ticket Scam at Batam Port
The Barelang Police held a press conference revealing a fraud case involving illegal ferry ticket brokers at ASDP Telaga Punggur Port in Batam.
The briefing was led by Riau Islands Police spokesperson Kombes Pol Nona Pricillia Ohei, accompanied by investigators from the Barelang Police Criminal Investigation Unit.
Victim Report Triggered Investigation
The case came to light after a report from a traveller who claimed to have been cheated while attempting to buy a ferry ticket.
The victim, identified as E (23), and her husband S (44) were planning to travel on a Roro ferry from Punggur to Kuala Tungkal.
Suspect Posed as Ticket Broker
According to police, the victim’s husband contacted one of the suspects, MY (47), on March 13 to inquire about ferry ticket availability.
The suspect told them to come directly to the port and later offered them a ticket for Rp500,000, which was eventually negotiated down to Rp400,000.
Victims Allowed Onboard Without Ticket
After directing the victims onto KMP Sembilang, the suspect collected the Rp400,000 payment but never issued an official ticket.
Investigations revealed the suspect took advantage of the crowded port situation ahead of the Lebaran travel period.
Three Suspects and Evidence Seized
Police later uncovered that the scam involved three suspects:
– MY (47) – broker who contacted victims and collected payment
– AM (43) – a BUMN employee responsible for checking tickets onboard
– RY (33) – tasked with allowing passengers to enter the ship without tickets
Officers seized three mobile phones and Rp900,000 in cash, believed to be proceeds from the fraud.
The suspects have been charged under Article 494 of Indonesia’s Criminal Code (KUHP) for fraud. Police are urging the public to avoid buying tickets from unofficial brokers and to report suspicious activity through the 24-hour police hotline 110.
