Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Ministry of National Development Planning (PPN)/Bappenas has stated that water, energy and food security form the foundation of the country’s long-term development plan outlined in the National Long-Term Development Plan (RPJPN) 2025-2045.

Dadang Jainal Mutaqin, Director of Forestry and Water Resource Conservation at the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas, explained during a dissemination event for the Indonesia Environmental Outlook (IEO) 2026 by the KEHATI Foundation in Jakarta on Friday that the nexus between water, energy and food (WEF Nexus) has been incorporated into the RPJPN 2025-2045 as a foundation for sustainable development planning at both national and regional levels.

“One of the game changers to achieve these targets is the WEF Nexus to ensure that food, energy and water provision remains balanced, with no trade-offs,” said Dadang. “Because if we prioritise one resource, the others will certainly be affected,” he added.

This aligns with the Asta Cita (Eight Pillars) of President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka’s administration, which aims to strengthen national defence and security systems and promote national self-sufficiency through food security, energy independence, water security, Islamic economics, digital economy, green economy and blue economy.

Success indicators include increased water storage capacity per capita, expanded piped water networks and households with access to safe drinking water, reduced critical land areas and increased households with access to sanitation services.

In the food sector, the government targets the development of food production centres and diverse food types including aquatic products, livestock, local crops and plant-based foods.

In the energy sector, priorities for the 2025-2045 period include increased energy supply, expanded access to and coverage of energy services and strengthened implementation of just energy transition.

Speaking at the same event, Muhamad Burhanudin, Environmental Advocacy Manager at the KEHATI Foundation, explained that the IEO 2026 promotes three scenarios for policy change to avoid environmental crises affecting food, energy and water security.

The three proposals are: systemic transformation of natural resource management, cross-sectoral policy integration through the nexus approach, and ecosystem restoration with strengthened community participation at the grassroots level.
