Bapanas: Strategic food supply remains secure despite geopolitical turmoil
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Food Agency (Bapanas) affirmed that the projection for food availability through to Eid al-Fitr 2026 remains safe, even amid the dynamics and global geopolitical turmoil, particularly in the Middle East.
“Indonesia’s food security is ensured to be safe and sufficient to meet the consumption needs of the population,” said Bapanas’ Senior Secretary Sarwo Edhy in the Coordinating Meeting on Readiness for Eid al-Fitr 1447 AH as reported in Jakarta on Tuesday.
He said that domestically sourced strategic staple food production remains strong to support national stocks, including supplying the public’s needs during Ramadan to Eid momentum 2026.
Bapanas notes that at least nine strategic staple commodities do not require imports to meet the consumption needs of Indonesians. In fact, nine commodities have achieved food self-sufficiency.
“It should be conveyed that the Food Balance and Production/Import Projections through to the end of April 2026 show that Indonesia still has a surplus. Therefore the Food Balance position through to the end of April or after Eid is predicted to be safe,” Sarwo explained.
Based on the projection, national rice availability through to the end of April 2026 is expected to record a surplus of 17.2 million tonnes.
That figure comes from the initial stock at the start of the year plus production from January to April amounting to 27.5 million tonnes, then subtracting consumption needs through April of 10.3 million tonnes.
