Bantargebang Landfill Collapse Victims to Receive Assistance
The Head of Jakarta’s Environmental Services Office, Asep Kuswanto, has ensured that all victims affected by the landfill collapse at Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Facility will receive assistance. The garbage mountain landslide at Bantargebang on Sunday, 8 March 2026, resulted in 13 people becoming victims.
In detail, five people remain missing and four victims have been found safe. Four other victims have been declared deceased. The four deceased victims comprised two truck drivers and two local residents.
Asep stated that all personnel with PJLP (Other Service Provider Individual) status who died due to this incident will receive compensation through the Workers’ Social Security Agency (BPJS Ketenagakerjaan). The regional government, he said, will also bear medical costs for victims who sustained injuries.
“In addition, social assistance will also be provided to other affected victims, including food stall owners and waste pickers who do not have PJLP status,” he said in his statement on Monday, 9 March 2026.
The Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency stated that the waste landslide in zone 4 of the Bantargebang Facility was caused by heavy rain with a long duration. Jakarta’s BPBD Executive Head Isnawa Adji said the incident occurred at 14:30.
“When garbage trucks were queuing to unload their cargo, a sudden landslide struck five garbage trucks and one food stall in the vicinity,” he said, citing Antara news agency.
The search and evacuation process for victims is still ongoing. A total of 336 combined personnel and 15 excavators have been deployed to search for missing victims buried in the waste pile.
