Bank Mandiri's Sustainability Journey Continues to Advance on Earth Day 2026
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - PT Bank Mandiri (Persero) Tbk (Bank Mandiri) has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability as an integral part of the bank’s business and operational strategy. Sustainability is pursued as a long-term, measurable journey that delivers added value to stakeholders, involving corporate to retail customers in an integrated ecosystem. Under the spirit of Sinergi Majukan Negeri, Bank Mandiri is strengthening its role as a catalyst in accelerating Indonesia’s green economy through data-based approaches, tangible implementations, and sustainable impacts. Deputy Director of Bank Mandiri, Henry Panjaitan, stated that by March 2026, the bank’s sustainable financing portfolio reached approximately Rp320 trillion, growing 8.8% annually, with green financing amounting to Rp167 trillion and social financing at Rp153 trillion. This achievement positions Bank Mandiri as the market leader in green financing in Indonesia, with a share of more than 35% compared to the three major national banks. “We are optimistic that sustainable financing will continue to grow in the range of 7-9% annually, in line with the bank’s overall credit growth target. Amid the dynamics of domestic and global macroeconomic conditions, we remain focused on prudent principles in financing expansion. Thus, we continue to maintain a balance between business growth and asset quality,” said Henry on Saturday (25/4/2026). This optimism is supported by a solid pipeline, where around 77% comes from sectors aligned with national development agendas, including energy resilience financing such as renewables and energy efficiency, eco-efficient products, inclusive housing through the FLPP programme, and strengthening productive financing. Throughout 2025, Bank Mandiri also issued Green Bond Phase 2 and Sustainability Bond Phase 1 with a total value of Rp10 trillion, directed towards sustainable projects. Additionally, Bank Mandiri actively collaborates with regulators and stakeholders through various forums such as Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), roundtables, and pilot programmes, including the development of new financing schemes in priority sectors like waste-to-energy. In line with this, Bank Mandiri continues to expand access to sustainability solutions for the public. The bank encourages public participation through the launch of the Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Certificate (SPE-GRK) feature for the retail segment on the Livin’ Planet platform in the Livin’ by Mandiri app. Through this feature, customers can calculate their emission footprint, perform carbon offsets, and directly purchase SPE-GRK. The currently available SPE-GRK comes from the Sei Mangkei Biogas Power Plant (PLTBg) project owned by Pertamina New & Renewable Energy, with a capacity of 2.4 MW in North Sumatra, which processes Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) waste into renewable energy. This project contributes to emission reductions of around 265,000 tCO2e, equivalent to emissions from approximately 30,000 petrol-fuelled vehicles. This initiative, a collaboration between Bank Mandiri and IDXCarbon, also expands access to the carbon market, which was previously more accessible to corporate segments, making it more inclusive for the wider public. In addition, Bank Mandiri offers various programmes to promote sustainable lifestyles, including electric vehicle offerings through Livin’ Auto, eco-friendly debit cards made from Recycled PVC, and special edition Livin’ Eco Green e-money products for Earth Day on the Livin’ Sukha platform. In line with these initiatives, internally, Bank Mandiri also encourages active employee involvement by inviting all employees to contribute to a digital-based tree-planting programme through the Livin’ Planet feature, held from 11-19 April 2026. This programme was packaged as a competition to boost engagement while strengthening employees’ understanding of individual roles in implementing ESG in the workplace. The initiative successfully attracted participation from more than 500 employees, with a total contribution of over 800 red mangrove trees to be planted in the Tangerang area, Banten. As part of its commitment to the Net Zero Operation target by 2030, Bank Mandiri has consistently reduced operational emissions by 32% from the 2019 baseline through various initiatives, such as optimising green buildings, using electric and hybrid vehicles, and installing solar panels. Bank Mandiri emphasises that its sustainability journey has progressed with a clear direction and strong foundation for the company. Moving forward, the company will continue to accelerate sustainability through strengthened collaborations, innovations, and expanded impacts across all business lines and operations to achieve sustainable excellence. With an integrated and data-based approach, Bank Mandiri is committed to remaining a primary driver in the transformation towards a greener, more inclusive, and sustainable economy.
