Bank Indonesia Reduces US Dollar Purchase Limit to US$50,000 per Month
Bank Indonesia (BI) will implement a new policy to support rupiah exchange rate stability. The policy reduces the limit on US dollar purchases from the previous US$100,000 per individual per month to US$50,000 per individual per month, set to take effect from 1 April 2026.
Deputy Governor Thomas Djiwandono stated that the policy forms part of refinements to foreign exchange purchase regulations whilst simultaneously safeguarding rupiah stability and the domestic market.
βIn formulating this policy, BI has considered exchange rates, liquidity, and market behaviour. The reduction in threshold aims to prevent speculative activity. The refinement will be implemented on 1 April, with BI providing a one-month transition period to ensure smooth implementation,β said Thomas on Tuesday (17 March 2026).
The policy details include adjustments to the cash foreign exchange purchase threshold against the rupiah, reduced from US$100,000 per individual per month to US$50,000 per individual per month.
Additionally, the threshold for DNDF/Forward sales will increase from US$5 million per transaction to US$10 million per transaction. BI will also increase the threshold for currency swap purchases and sales from US$5 million to US$10 million per transaction.
Beyond the foreign exchange purchase policy, BI will strengthen reporting requirements for foreign exchange flows through adjustments to the documentation requirement threshold for outbound fund transfers in foreign currency from US$100,000 to US$50,000. This policy will also become effective in April 2026.
