US banks are at risk of having their weaknesses exposed by artificial intelligence (AI). This was directly warned by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. According to them, the latest threat comes from Anthropic’s newest AI model named Mythos. The model is reported to be highly powerful and capable of identifying previously unknown vulnerabilities. Anthropic recently launched Mythos. However, due to these issues, the company has delayed a wider rollout. A Bloomberg News report, cited by Yahoo Finance, states that the AI model can identify and exploit weaknesses in every major system and major web browser. Anthropic has also undertaken several efforts to prevent the problem from escalating further. For instance, it held a meeting with US officials last week. The discussion at that time concerned the offensive and defensive cyber capabilities posed by Mythos. Meanwhile, according to a third source, Anthropic provided briefings to senior US officials and industry stakeholders on Mythos’s capabilities before its launch. A meeting with the US Treasury Department was also held last week so that banks could be informed of the risks they face. The US government has also urged those banks to take steps to protect their systems. Invitations to the meeting have been sent, but most CEOs are reportedly already in Washington for another meeting. Chiefs from Citigroup, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Goldman Sachs are reportedly attending. Meanwhile, Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan, is reportedly not attending the meeting. It is also reported that Anthropic has limited access to Mythos to only 40 technology companies. Some of its users include Microsoft and Google.
