Amid heightened transaction activity during Ramadan through Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijra, Bank BJB has reminded the public to remain cautious of various banking fraud schemes that typically escalate ahead of Eid. The convenience of banking services, whether through branch offices or digital channels, must be balanced with vigilance to protect customers from potential cybercrime.

Common scam methods currently circulating include phishing, quishing through fake QR codes, and social engineering that exploits psychological manipulation of victims. During periods of holiday bonus distributions and increased shopping transactions, criminals typically capitalise on this momentum using increasingly sophisticated and convincing tactics.

Phishing is a technique designed to deceive individuals into providing sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, or credit card details. Perpetrators typically send messages offering holiday bonus rewards, special Ramadan promotions, or include suspicious links that mimic official banking websites.

Quishing, meanwhile, is a fraud method that exploits counterfeit Quick Response (QR) codes to steal personal data or distribute malware to victims’ devices. Perpetrators often direct victims to scan fake QR codes whilst conducting transactions in public places or through digital messages.

Social engineering, or “soceng,” is a psychological manipulation technique in which fraudsters impersonate trusted parties such as bank staff or customer service representatives to obtain confidential information. In many cases, perpetrators create panic to trick victims into unwittingly disclosing critical data.

The surge in top-up transactions and e-wallet usage during Ramadan also increases the risk of account misuse. Customers are urged to conduct transactions only through official applications and to double-check recipient numbers before transferring funds. Additionally, the public should be wary of investment offers or rapid loan schemes with unclear high returns and questionable legal status. Ensure such institutions are registered and supervised by the Financial Services Authority.

Bank BJB emphasises that customers must never share personal data, PINs, one-time passwords (OTPs), or passwords with anyone, including those claiming to be bank staff. Customers are also advised to always verify the authenticity of links, service numbers, and information sources before conducting transactions.

Through strengthened services and customer education on fraud prevention, Bank BJB is committed to ensuring the public can celebrate Eid with peace of mind and security in all their financial transaction needs.
