Banharn enjoys Singapore's traffic

SINGAPORE (AFP): Thai Prime Minister Banharn Silpa-archa, grappling with the task of resolving Bangkok's traffic nightmare, was all ears yesterday at a briefing on Singapore's efficient land transport system.

Banharn, who arrived here on Thursday for a three-day official visit, also had a feel of Singapore's silky-running mass rapid transit (MRT) system as he cruised from downtown all the way to the north of the island, near the causeway to Malaysia.

He was given a 45-minute briefing by the recently-established Singapore Land Transport Authority's chief executive officer Liew Heng San.

Bangkok suffers from what is reputed to be the world's worst traffic conditions, which are expected to deteriorate with hundreds of new cars hitting the streets everyday in the city of 10 million people.
