Bandung City DPRD member Andri Gunawan is urging the Bandung City Government to promptly take concrete steps to protect the fate of zoo employees who are currently in a state of uncertainty regarding their status. He assesses that the current condition of the workers is highly concerning as they are caught between two entities that are equally unable to provide certainty. They are still registered as foundation employees, but on the other hand, the foundation no longer has financial capacity after the zoo’s operations ceased and its Conservation Institution (LK) status was revoked. “Do not let these employees become like ‘ronin’, samurai without a master. They have rights that must be protected, such as salaries, guarantees, and pension rights,” said Andri, when met by Republika.co.id on Friday (27/3/26). According to him, one solution that can be immediately pursued is through the Operational Control Subordinate (BKO) scheme, where the Bandung City Government can utilise the existing workforce while ensuring their rights are still fulfilled. He suggests that the City Government officially write to the foundation to arrange that scheme. Andri also regrets the decision to close the zoo, which he deems too hasty, especially regarding the revocation of the LK status. He opines that operations should still be able to continue for a while to maintain income for meeting the needs of the animals and employee welfare. “If opened, there is still revenue. That can help the continuity of animal care as well as ensure employees continue to receive their rights,” he said. The current situation, according to Andri, has directly impacted worker welfare. He revealed that the employees have not received salaries since February. “This must be a serious concern. Employees have not been paid since February, while their status is also unclear—still with the foundation but not receiving their rights, and not yet part of the City Government,” said Andri. He hopes the Bandung City Government does not prolong decision-making. According to him, clarity on workforce status is not just an administrative matter, but concerns the livelihood of the workers and their families. “There must be bias towards them. Do not let institutional issues drag on, while the people within are neglected,” said Andri.
