Bali hosts language talks

DENPASAR, Bali: The tourist island will host the second international conference on language in development in Nusa Dua from April 10 through 12.

The conference is being organized by the Indonesia-Australia Language Foundation in cooperation with the Asian Institute of Technology of Bangkok and the National Center for English Language Teaching and Research of Sydney.

"The biennial conference is to provide a forum for an exchange of views and ideas on language and communication in development," Tony Crooks, the conference manager, said yesterday.

The three-day conference is sponsored by the Australian International Development Assistance Bureau and the British Council, which are funding the speakers.

He said the conference is expected to lead not only to greater cooperation between donor agencies and language experts in designing the language input components of development projects, but also to formal and informal international links, staff exchanges and cooperative research projects. (imn)
