Bali 23-Year-Old Diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes Needs Four Insulin Injections a Day
A 23-year-old man from Denpasar, Bali, has shared his life story after being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on 26 March 2018. The young man, Rexi Edgar, learned of his condition that day. ‘I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, and no, this isn’t due to lifestyle or eating too much sugar,’ he said, quoted from Instagram user @rexiedgarr, with permission. The report was published on 3 March 2026 by detikHealth. Rexi described a drastic weight loss of almost 20 kilograms without following a diet. He also experienced excessive thirst, increased urination, waking at night frequently and prolonged fatigue. The symptoms appeared gradually and worsened over several months. ‘This is an autoimmune or genetic condition, where my immune system attacks my own pancreas so it cannot produce insulin anymore,’ he added. Because something was wrong with his body, Rexi decided to seek medical attention at a hospital. After examinations, his fasting blood glucose (FBG) and haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) were found to be very high, leading doctors to confirm a diagnosis of type 1 diabetes. The condition has had a substantial physical and mental impact. He had to inject insulin four times a day and cope with fluctuations in blood sugar levels. But over time Rexi began to adapt and come to terms with the disease. ‘Fast forward to eight years later: I’m not cured, and perhaps I never will be. But I’m totally fine. It took five years to truly come to terms with it, and this condition has pushed me to live a better life,’ he told detikcom. Now he can carry out daily activities with strict blood glucose control. He monitors his blood sugar daily and continues insulin therapy. When blood glucose remains within the normal range, he can stay active without significant discomfort. He is also active in sport, including regular gym sessions and taking part in half-marathon races. ‘Now I can regularly go to the gym, run a half marathon, maintain an ideal physique, volunteer teaching children at Sunday school, and even with this condition many people are inspired,’ he continued.
