JAKARTA - The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia, has responded to reports of price increases for 12-kilogram (kg) LPG cylinders in several areas of Jabodetabek. The price hike is occurring amid surging liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices due to disrupted energy distribution caused by the war in the Middle East. He explained that 12kg LPG is a non-subsidised type, intended for affluent society, so the price increase is not an issue. According to him, the state is truly present for all citizens, but aid is prioritised for the less fortunate. Meanwhile, affluent groups are expected to contribute by using non-subsidised energy. “Look, the state is here to help all citizens, but the priority is for our brothers and sisters who are not able. If they are able, they should contribute to mutual help, that’s it,” he said. Bahlil stated that this decision is guidance from President Prabowo Subianto. “For the subsidised (prices), they remain the same. I can only guarantee subsidised prices because that is the President’s order and regulatory directive,” he said. Conversely, non-subsidised LPG prices will follow market mechanisms and may adjust accordingly. “Market prices (for non-subsidised). So, for example, like rich people, should someone earning over Rp500 million per month be told to use 3kg LPG? Sorry,” said Bahlil. Regarding LPG supplies, he assured that availability is secure. The government has even secured a new LPG import source from Russia to maintain national energy resilience.
