Jakarta — Indonesian Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia explained why the country’s fuel stock stands at only about 21-25 days. He said the availability of fuel follows the capacity of storage facilities, and currently domestic storage capacity is around 25 days. ‘Why don’t we stock more than 25 days? If we were to do so, where would we store it? The storage capacity isn’t enough,’ Bahlil told reporters at the Presidential Palace complex in Central Jakarta on Wednesday, 4 March 2026. He added that the ability to hold fuel for around 25 days has been in place for a long time, and the figure aligns with the national standard of a minimum 20-21 days. ‘So please set the record straight: it’s not that we cannot prepare more than 23 days, because there simply isn’t the capacity,’ he said. However, the government under President Prabowo Subianto will expand storage to ensure energy resilience. ‘Mr President Prabowo has ordered us to quickly build storage so our energy resilience is secured. How long should the storage last? God willing, the plan is up to three months. This is the minimum global consensus standard,’ Bahlil said. For context, Indonesia’s fuel stock has attracted public attention following reporting in the wake of tensions between Iran, Israel and the United States. The public compared it with Japan’s fuel stock of 254 days, despite Japan’s smaller territory.
