Bahlil Assures Public That Fuel Subsidies Remain Under Control
Jakarta — Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia has appealed to the public not to worry about potential spikes in fuel prices, particularly subsidised fuel, assuring that the government maintains control over prices.
Bahlil stressed that the government will not allow the public to bear the full burden of the fallout from escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, at least until after the Lebaran Eid al-Fitr celebration concludes.
“I want to say that there will be no increase until the end of the holiday, and hopefully beyond, as fuel subsidies will remain under government control. The government cares greatly about the condition of the people. We do not want all the burden to be placed on the public,” Bahlil said when met at the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry office in Jakarta on Tuesday, 17 March 2026.
Despite panic buying occurring in other countries, Bahlil stressed that each country has its own needs and policies.
“So hopefully we will not follow the patterns of other countries that we know where the state should be present for the people’s needs,” he said.
Regarding fuel stocks, Bahlil confirmed that fuel supply remains secure and there are no shortages. However, he noted that the government continues to monitor geopolitical developments to adjust the fuel subsidies provided.
“Regarding prices, the state will continue to provide subsidies. We will remain present. The level of subsidy will depend on geopolitical developments. But if oil prices reach US$100 per barrel — the average now is around US$70 — hopefully we can still manage within the state budget,” he asserted.
