Babies from Pakem Shelter to be Reunited with Parents Soon
The Sleman Regency Social Service is endeavouring to fulfil the right to origins for a baby evacuated from a house in Pakem, Sleman. In the near future, the service will reunite the biological parents with the baby.
The Head of the Sleman Regency Social Service, Wawan Widiantoro, stated that the evacuation process took place on Friday (8/5). During the evacuation of the 11 babies, two children had already been taken by their parents.
“Indeed, there were eleven babies. The two were taken by their biological parents through our assessment after being properly checked and assessed,” said Wawan when contacted by reporters on Monday (11/5/2026).
Meanwhile, three babies, after examination, had to be referred to hospital. The other six babies were declared healthy and are now being cared for at the Social Rehabilitation and Child Care Centre (BRSPA).
Wawan explained that his side had coordinated with relevant stakeholders, including the police.
“We remain committed to prioritising, emphasising safety, health, and protection of the rights of those children, including protecting their right to origins,” he stressed.
To that end, the service will reunite the children with their biological parents to discuss custody rights. Wawan assured that before granting custody to the biological parents, an assessment will be conducted together with the police and other agencies.
“As much as possible, we will soon reunite them with their biological mother or parents after going through that strict assessment,” he said.
“Yes, as much as possible, they must be returned or taken by their biological parents as well,” he added.
The Head of Criminal Investigation at the Sleman Police Resort, AKP Mateus Wiwit Kustiyadi, explained that initially, officers received information about the presence of dozens of babies in a house from local village officials.
“Of course, we felt there was something suspicious about the presence of 11 babies in Hargobinangun. In a house cared for or looked after by three people,” said Wiwit to reporters on Monday (11/5).
Wiwit explained that the 11 babies were then evacuated on Friday (8/5) afternoon together with relevant services. Three babies are being treated at the hospital, two babies were taken by those claiming to be their mothers, while the other six babies were evacuated by the Sleman Social Service.
“Three babies we are treating at RSUD, yesterday two babies were taken by those claiming to be their mothers. Then the other six babies are being cared for by social services for further handling,” he said.
Wiwit stated that a total of 11 people have been examined. This includes a midwife with initials ORP who assisted in the delivery process.
Then, a woman with initials K and a man with initials S, who are the midwife’s parents. The examination results showed that both helped care for the babies along with a helper. Including the six parents of the babies.
“The witnesses we have clarified include one midwife, initials ORP. Regarding the caregiver, Mrs K. Assisted by her husband, Mr S, and one helper,” said Wiwit.
