AYAM Aims to Import 800,000 Grand Parent Stock Chickens to Meet Demand from the Free Nutritious Meal Programme

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The national poultry industry is entering a growth phase. The Free Nutritious Meal Programme (MBG) is driving an increase in the consumption of animal protein, particularly chicken meat.

PT Janu Putra Sejahtera Tbk (AYAM), also known as JPS, is increasing its supply of Grand Parent Stock (GPS) chickens from the United States and New Zealand in 2026.

This move follows the government’s policy of increasing the national GPS import quota from 578,000 to 800,000 this year.

The policy is aimed at anticipating the surge in protein demand, particularly for the MBG programme.

AYAM’s Director, Sri Mulyani, said that the increase in imports is part of a long-term strategy based on industrial planning.

“The industry sentiment is very positive. The stabilisation of live bird prices through the establishment of a minimum farm-gate price, the control of oversupply through the culling of Day Old Chicks (DOC), and the support for feed stabilisation, such as the SPHP (Stabilisation and Price Control) for corn, are making the industry’s foundations much healthier. With the additional basic demand from the MBG, we see strong and sustainable growth opportunities,” said Sri Mulyani in a press release on Thursday (26/2/2026).

The allocation is part of the implementation of the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART) between Indonesia and the United States, signed by President Prabowo Subianto and President Donald Trump in Washington DC on 19 February 2026.

The government has affirmed that the import policy will continue to prioritise the protection of domestic breeders and maintain the balance of supply and prices of chickens nationally.

Indonesia does not yet have facilities for breeding primary GPS chickens. Dependence on imports at the upstream level remains a necessity for the industry.

As a recipient of the quota, AYAM is strengthening its production base for the next two years. Each GPS chicken can produce 50 to 60 Parent Stock (PS).

Each PS then hatches 150 to 160 final stock or broiler chickens. This year’s import decision will affect the supply structure until 2028.

AYAM has GP breeding facilities with a physical capacity of 60,000 chickens. Operational capacity is limited to a maximum of 30,000 chickens in one active period.

This approach ensures that production performance and genetic quality remain consistent. The strategy also provides flexibility in supply when demand peaks, especially as the MBG programme is fully implemented in 2027 and 2028.
